DILI: Timor-Leste reported no new locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 in 10 municipalities on Sunday for the first time since April, a sign the current outbreak may be waning amid the country’s tough antivirus measures.

More than 6,000 people have been confirmed infected in an outbreak that officials said has been mainly driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant, which was brought in from abroad and caused a cluster in early August in the capital city of Dili.

There are no active COVID-19 cases in Aileu, Ainaro, Baucau , Covalima, Ermera, Lautem, Liqucia, Manatuto, Manufahi , RAEOA and Viqueqe, according to medical authorities.

There are five active cases spread across Dili and Bobonaro.

Across Timor-Leste, new daily local cases fell to the single-digit level last month, after peaking at the end of August.

Health authorities do not expect to alter their cautious stance in the near future – even when facing just a handful of local infections.

The country’s COVID-19 program said it did not expect to abandon its program easily.

Good hygiene practices including washing hands, maintaining social distance, and getting tested at first onset of symptom are advised to avoid the country losing its battle with the fast-spreading respiratory virus.
