DILI: Timor-Leste Commander of  Defence Forces (F-FDTL) Lere Anan Timur has called for clearer guidelines on who can be buried at the nation’s special hero cemetery in Metinaro, amid a discrepancy over the right for some people to be buried there.

Minister for Liberation and Combatant of Timor-Leste, Julio Sarmento ' Meta Malik' on Wednesday confirmed to National Parliament that burials at the Heroes cemetery were subject to approval by Defence Generals.

Lere has criticised the current system and called for a more transparent burial process at the hero’s cemetery, saying he did not agree with recent decisions.

" I think that the Minister for Liberation and Combatant must better establish who is entitled to be buried at Heroes Garden Cemetery in Metinaro and who is not entitled and these rules must be observed,” Lere told reporters.

Meta Malik declined to comment on individual cases, when asked who had approved burials of Nahadasi and Lemori, whose burial at the cemetery Lere said he did not support.  Lere also said there were occasions were people were not approved for burial that he supported.

“The process must be made clear so we can all comply with it.”
