DILI: Marking almost a week since a new infection was identified in the country, Timor-Leste reported a continuation of recoveries on Sunday, with 20 COVID-19 patients now released from hospital.

So far, there have been a total of 24 infections and no deaths.

Dr Sergio Lobo, spokesperson for the Integrated Crisis Management Centre’s (CIGC), has said people must not “discriminate” recovered patients, stressing they are no longer infected with the coronavirus and therefore not contagious.

He also encouraged people to maintain good hygiene and social distancing practices, putting the nation’s infection rate slow-down to people’s changed behaviour.

The comments come as the World Health Organization (WHO) reiterated on Saturday the coronavirus is believed to be "natural in origin", responding to a claim by US President Donald Trump that he had seen evidence that indicated the virus emerged from a virology institute in Wuhan, China.

Worldwide, the number of confirmed infections stands above 3.35 million, with nearly 239,000 deaths and approximately 1.05 million recoveries, the World Health Organisation reports.
