DILI: The head of the National Reconstruction Congress party  (CNRT), Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, has appealed to the population of Timor-Leste to remain calm and wait for the President of the Republic to decide on the nation’s leadership, amid growing fears of instability across the country.

On 18 November a statement signed by leaders of the new coalition opposition force, the Alliance Majority Parliamentary (AMP) -  Xanana, Taur Matan Ruak, the President of People Liberation Party (PLP) and José do Santos ‘Naimori’, the President of KHUNTO - was sent to Francisco Guterres Lu-Olo, the President of the Republic, saying they were ready to form an alternative government.

The AMP maintain the Fretilin-led minority government is unconstitutional, and failing to put forward a State program that befits the development needs of the country.

Speaking to reporters from Singapore, Xanana said the AMP would respect any decision made by the President.

“To overcome this situation is in the hand of the President of Republic Francisco Guterres ‘Lú-Olo’. We hope that the President of the Republic will decide base on the constitution and we will support it,’’ said Xanana.

He called on the population of Timor-Leste to remain calm and support the President’s decision when announced.
