DILI: National Parliamentarians have called for an immediate inquiry into the capacity of teachers set to be inaugurated this month, amid concern many on the new teacher list had not received proper training.

Paulo Moniz Maia, a national parliamentarian, said 4,200 names appeared on the national voluntary teacher list and had been given contracts, but these names did not correlate with the official teacher list held by the Ministry of Education.

“I call to the ministry of Education to stop the (teacher) inauguration until after we solve this problem,” Maia said. “If the Ministry of Education need some proof I am ready to show the evidence.”

Parliamentarian, Eládio Faculto, called for transparency and accountability in the teacher recruitment process, saying it was vital Timor-Leste had quality teachers to teach its young.
