DILI:Five days after the death of former president Francisco Guterres "Lu Olo", messages of condolence continue to arrive from around the world, reflecting the international respect held for one of Timor-Leste's founding leaders.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said he was "deeply saddened" by Lu Olo's passing and praised his contribution to strengthening the friendship between Japan and Timor-Leste. In a statement published by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iwaya said the former president had made "invaluable contributions" to relations between the two countries.

Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro on Sunday, lamented the death of Lu Olo, highlighting in a statement his “unavoidable role, first in the struggle for independence, and then in the process of building the Timorese state.” Portuguese news agency Lusa reported that Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also extended condolences on behalf of the Portuguese people.

Australia's Governor-General Sam Mostyn said Lu Olo had devoted his life to the service of his country and made a significant contribution to nation-building following the restoration of independence. According to a statement from Government House, she also recognised his role in strengthening ties between Timor-Leste and Australia.

Angolan Ambassador to Timor-Leste José Andrade de Lemos said Lu Olo's legacy would remain a testament to "courage, dedication and commitment" to Timor-Leste's freedom and sovereignty, according to comments published by VerAngola.

Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves described him as an "unavoidable figure in East Timorese history" and a builder of an independent and democratic Timor-Leste, according to Lusophone media reports.

The European Union Delegation to Timor-Leste said Lu Olo would be remembered for his "lifelong commitment to the independence, sovereignty and democratic development" of Timor-Leste and his contribution to strengthening international partnerships. The New Zealand Embassy described Lu Olo's life as one of service and dedication to his nation, while Cambodia expressed its "profound sadness" and solidarity with the people of Timor-Leste.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim remembered Lu Olo as a leader committed throughout his life to "the freedom of his people and the building of a democratic nation", according to a statement published on his official social media accounts.

Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic President Brahim Ghali described Lu Olo as a steadfast defender of self-determination whose struggle inspired people far beyond Timor-Leste.

Diplomatic missions in Dili also joined the tributes.

The tributes continued to flow as Timor-Leste laid its former president to rest on Friday following a state funeral attended by dignitaries, diplomats and thousands of mourners.

The continuing stream of condolences from Asia, Europe, the Pacific and Africa has underscored Francisco Guterres "Lu Olo's" standing beyond Timor-Leste's borders — as a former head of state, resistance leader and one of the defining figures of the country's journey to independence and nationhood.
